Overview

Undeniably, Frank is a pretty interesting piece of technology.

Frank, an AI-driven emotional analysis tool, provides insight into the well-being of individuals and teams through the analysis of unconscious user-based indicators. Through the analysis of everyday language, Frank is able to provide cognitive and emotional insights such as Joy, Positivity, Anger and Fear.

Challenge

Being the first of its kind, defining the who, what and why was the first milestone of the project. Beyond this, the next step was to shape what would be a Beta release of Frank. From a technical standpoint, understanding how artificial intelligence was to be implemented was a high priority which established the possibilities and constraints of the project. Designing a product within the space of mental health and well-being comes with a duty of care. All design and product decisions were made under the scrutiny of the internal team and external advisors.

Outcome

Starting as a blank canvas, the first challenge was to define who the product was for and what exactly the product was to be. The end goal was defined and from here the Frank team was able to work backwards, ideating and problem-solving along the way.

The artificial intelligence of Frank was trained on a vast array of language which has been scored against positivity, joy, anger, sadness, fear and disgust. When integrated with a communications tool such as Slack or Microsoft Teams, Frank establishes a relative measure of what it knows against the language of an individual or team within a workspace. The visual solution is friendly and accessible, utilising playful illustrations and a colour palette that is approachable. User flows were designed with simplicity in mind, allowing the user to focus on the data.

With the nature of a product like this, it is always a work in progress and there is always an opportunity to learn and grow. The next instalment is currently underway. In the meantime, see more of Frank here.
